Heat Pumps for Pacific Northwest Homes
A heat pump moves heat rather than burning fuel to create it. In summer it pulls heat out of your house. In winter it runs in reverse and brings heat in, even when the air outside is cold. One piece of equipment covers both seasons, which is why they suit a lot of homes here.
This region is close to ideal for the technology. Our winters are long, wet, and mild rather than brutally cold, and our hot stretches are short. A heat pump spends most of the year operating in the range where it is most efficient. Modern cold climate models keep producing usable heat well below freezing, so the old objection that a heat pump gives up in a cold snap does not describe the equipment being installed today.
If your home already has a gas furnace, a dual-fuel setup pairs the two. The heat pump handles the mild days that make up most of the heating season, and the furnace takes over in the coldest weather. For an existing home this is often the most practical upgrade available, because it uses the ductwork and the furnace you already have.
Rebates and utility incentives for heat pumps exist in both Oregon and Washington, and the programs change from year to year. Ask us what is currently available for your address and the equipment you are considering before you commit to anything.
Furnace and Heating Repair, Installation and Replacement
A furnace that will not light. A blower running without producing heat. A system that short cycles on and off, or one that has started making a noise it did not make last winter. Our technicians work out what is actually wrong before recommending a part, and our trucks carry enough stock to finish most repairs in the same visit.
Smell something off, see soot, or hear your CO alarm? Shut the furnace off, open a window and call us. A cracked heat exchanger can leak carbon monoxide into every room your furnace heats.
When a furnace reaches the end of its life, usually somewhere past fifteen years, replacement becomes the better spend. A replacement should be sized to the house with a load calculation rather than matched to whatever was there before, because an oversized furnace short cycles, wears out faster, and heats unevenly. The ductwork is worth assessing at the same time, since leaky ducts waste a meaningful share of whatever the furnace produces. Every installation includes a full comfort and load assessment, removal and disposal of the old furnace, the new unit installed and tested for airflow, efficiency and safety, and a final walkthrough. Most installations finish in a single day, and we only recommend equipment that meets ENERGY STAR standards.

Air Conditioning Repair, Installation and Replacement
Air conditioning gets used hard for a few weeks a year here, which is exactly when a weak system finally gives out. Common failures are warm air coming from the vents, a frozen evaporator coil, a refrigerant leak, an outdoor unit that will not start, and a system that runs all day without bringing the house down to temperature.
For planned work, a replacement, or a system that has been declining for a season or two, book a scheduled visit instead, so there is time to talk through what is worth repairing and what is worth replacing. A replacement starts with a full load calculation to size the system to the house, and we look at duct design at the same time, because a correctly sized unit on undersized ducts still underperforms.

Ductless Mini Split Systems
A ductless mini split puts an indoor unit in the room it serves and connects it to an outdoor compressor through a small line set run through the wall. No ductwork required.
That makes it the answer for a lot of the housing stock around here. Older homes that never had ducts, additions and converted attics, garages and workshops, and the one room that has always run hotter or colder than the rest of the house. Each indoor unit has its own control, so you are not conditioning space nobody is using. Most ductless systems are heat pumps, which means the same equipment covers winter and summer.
Indoor Air Quality and Air Purification
Homes in this region stay closed up through a long wet season, which concentrates whatever is already inside. Dust, pet dander, cooking residue, and in a lot of houses, more moisture than anyone wants.
Start with testing. We measure what is actually in your air, carbon monoxide included, rather than guessing at a fix. From there we work on the whole picture rather than selling a single box. Higher grade filtration on the system you already own. Whole home purification where filtration alone is not enough. Humidifiers and dehumidifiers to bring moisture into a range that is comfortable and does not feed mold. Duct sealing and duct cleaning when the distribution system itself is carrying the problem around the house. UV germicidal lights and air scrubbers where what you are dealing with is biological. Energy recovery ventilators to bring in fresh air without throwing away the heat you paid for. Zoning where different parts of the house need different treatment.
We evaluate what you are dealing with and recommend treatment that fits the situation.
Smart Thermostat Installation
A thermostat is the least expensive piece of your HVAC system and the one with the most influence over what you spend running it.
We install and configure smart and programmable thermostats, including Nest, Ecobee, and Honeywell. The part homeowners underestimate is compatibility. Not every thermostat works with every system, and heat pumps, dual-fuel setups, and multi-stage equipment all need wiring and configuration that a standard install guide does not cover. Getting that right is the difference between a thermostat that saves you money and one that quietly runs your auxiliary heat all winter. Most installations take 30 to 60 minutes.

HVAC Maintenance Plans and Tune-Ups
Most HVAC failures are visible months earlier. A capacitor reading low. A refrigerant charge drifting. A flame sensor going dirty. A filter nobody has changed since spring.
Our HVAC Maintenance Plans cover two inspection visits a year, one in spring and one in fall, covering one outdoor unit and one indoor unit. Inspections do not include repairs, but anything found comes with a 10% discount on parts and labor. Regular service extends the life of the equipment, and it catches the small inexpensive parts before they take an expensive one with them.

Straightforward Pricing
That covers getting a licensed technician to your property, their time and travel, and a professional visual inspection of the system. The technician then walks you through what they found and what your options are.
To be clear about how it works, because it matters: the $139 is charged in addition to any repair work you decide to go ahead with. It is not a credit against the repair.
Whatever the work turns out to be, you get a firm price before it starts. That price includes labor, parts, miscellaneous materials, and the time to acquire parts. We do not diagnose equipment sight unseen, because every system and every house is different, which is why the inspection comes first.
Monthly Pay Relief is available on approved credit. Two options are running now: no payments and no interest if the balance is paid in full within 12 months, or 9.99% APR spread over 96 months, which is eight years.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I choose an HVAC contractor?
Check that they are licensed in your state and carry insurance, then look at how they price. A contractor who prices a repair over the phone without seeing the system is guessing. Ask what their diagnostic visit costs and whether you get a firm price before work begins. Local reviews and years in business tell you whether they will still be there for the warranty.
How often should HVAC maintenance be performed?
Twice a year for most systems. Once before the heating season and once before cooling. Heat pumps and ductless systems run year-round, so they benefit from the same schedule. Between visits, changing filters every one to three months does more for efficiency and air quality than anything else you can do yourself.
What is the average lifespan of an HVAC system?
Fifteen to twenty years for a furnace or air conditioner, and often a little less for a heat pump because it runs in both seasons. Maintenance moves that number more than brand does. Once a system is past fifteen years and needing repeat repairs, the money usually goes further toward replacement.
What makes D&F a top HVAC company?
Ninety nine years in business under family ownership, licensed in both Oregon and Washington, and a 4.5-star Google rating. We give you a firm price before work starts, and we do not diagnose sight unseen.
Do you service both residential and light commercial HVAC systems?
Yes. We handle residential heating, cooling, and air quality, and light commercial heating. If you are not sure whether your system falls into that range, call and describe it.
Do you offer Monthly Pay Relief for HVAC installations?
Yes, on approved credit. Two options are running now: no payments and no interest if you pay the balance in full within 12 months, or 9.99% APR spread over 96 months, which is eight years. We will go through what a system actually costs before any Monthly Pay Relief conversation, so you are deciding with real numbers.
Do you install heat pumps, and is one right for my home?
Yes, we install, repair, and maintain heat pumps including ductless systems. Whether one suits your home depends on your existing ductwork, your current heating fuel, and how the house is insulated. Homes with a working gas furnace often do best with a dual-fuel setup. Homes without ductwork are usually better served by a ductless system.
What does the $139 Cost of Inspection Work cover?
It covers sending a licensed technician to your property, their time and travel, and a professional visual inspection of the system, after which they present your options. The $139 is charged in addition to any repair work you approve. It is not a credit against the repair, and our current offers do not reduce it.
