FAQs About Water Heaters

As conventional storage water heaters age, sediment will build up inside. When the pressure inside of the tank changes dramatically or the water temperature changes, the sediment will make loud popping noises. Although these popping noises can be alarming, it isn’t a cause for emergency. These sounds are often a sign that your water heater is reaching the end of its life. Here in the Pacific Northwest, hard water can contribute to problems with your water heater. Learn more about hard water at USGS.gov.
In the United States, 52% of homes in the United States have natural gas water heaters, 42% have electric water heaters, and the remainder have propane, and then fuel oil.[1]

If you’re in the market for a new water heater, it’s a good idea to learn the types available. Those include: Tankless or demand-type water heaters, solar water heaters, conventional storage water heaters, solar water heaters, and tankless coil and indirect water heaters.[2] At D&F Plumbing, Heating and Cooling, we sell and install tankless systems and storage water heaters.

The average water heater lasts about 13 years, according to the EPA[3] but many can still operate past their life expectancy. We recommend being proactive and replacing it before it fails. Signs of failure include: trouble heating up, rusty water, and loud unusual noises.

Since they use 8% less energy than traditional models, ENERGY STAR certified water heaters can save a family of four around $25 a year or $2,400 over the life of the water heater.[4] They also qualify for generous incentives that will help reduce the incremental costs of the unit.

The standard temperature for most water heaters is 140°F but the Department of Energy recommended setting them to 120°F to help slow mineral buildup and corrosion.[5]

WHY CHOOSE D & F?

"We had D&F replace a kitchen faucet at a rental we own in SE Portland. Teena was terrific on the phone, getting us scheduled quickly, and Tyler showed up on time and did a great job. Throughout, communication was excellent. We would recommend them to anyone, and will definitely use them again both at the rental and at our own house."

Ethan S.

"D&F plumbing is the best! I probably use them a few times a year and have never been disappointed with either the service or pricing. The Plumbers are always so nice, respectful and incredibly helpful! Jesse came out today and was awesome! Randy in office is the absolute best as well!! D&F is the plumbing company I’ll use and I recommend them to everyone."

Rachel A.

"I called D and F to help me figure out how to turn the water back on that was accidentally turned off. They were supposed to call me back, but instead showed up within minutes and fixed the problem free of charge. I'm very happy with how they handled this issue and I'll definitely be using them on the next job."
