What is a French Drain?

A French drain is a trench installed along your foundation’s perimeter or along the inside of your foundation that collects and channels water away safely. If you have a flat yard, there is really nowhere water runoff can go, so you may experience a lot of standing water.

How do French Drains Work?

There are two common forms of French drain installation. The most common form is an open trench design. It has a perforated pipe inside and is covered with gravel or stone. This design allows more runoff to enter the pipes and is suitable in areas where surface water moves quickly. The other type of French drain design is buried a few inches beneath your lawn.

Fortunately, French drains don’t require much maintenance. However, over time they can get clogged with leaves, mud, and debris. Once the piping has become clogged, water, calcium, and lime can buildup and weaken your cement, causing it to crack or buckle.
